That Part Is True

That Part is True
words and music by MPFS
I loved you more than I ever loved a woman
But I didn’t love you well I was thinking too much
I was so dumb I couldn’t tie my laces
When you were looking at me I couldn’t park the car
That part is true and this other part is also true:
I loved you more than I ever loved a woman
Man, I got friends, I call ‘em on the phone
I act all casual, they say “what’s going on Mikey?”
I say you know my heart because it’s where you reside
You know my arms, you can crash there any time
Yeah, that part is true and this other part is also true
I love you more than I ever loved a woman
I drink all the time, it’s because I am thirsty
But I could tell you ‘bout my brother, how he became my hero
I could tell you ‘bout my mother, she works overtime
Yeah, that part is true and this other part is also true
I loved you more than I ever loved a woman
Yeah that part is true and this other part is also true
You know my heart because it’s where you reside
You know my arms, you can crash there anytime

The boy from the dirty room
words & music by MPFS
Boy, I see you coming
Don’t know what it’s for
When I left you in that dirty room
I told you not to come around no more
Told you not to come around
Girl, just take a look at me
Look at my new clothes
The boy you left in the dirty room
Is gone as only I know
That’s what I’m here to tell you
I see you have combed your hair
And you now wear clean clothes
But you are the boy from the dirty room
The clothes are just for show, boy
You’re putting on a show
Girl, I have cleaned that room
As I now wear clean clothes
I swear it all across my life
I’ve cleaned my heart and soul
I swear I’ve gotten clean
You are the boy from the dirty room
I recognize your hands
Your heart and soul means nothing to me
If you’re trying to make amends
You better make other plans
I’m sick of boys in dirty rooms
Sick of my broken heart
I need to hands to care for me
Not tear me all apart
You tore me all apart
Yes, I am the boy from the dirty room
You have felt my hands
But they have got a purpose now
It is your heart to hold
It is your dreams to guard
You’ve come too late
Too late
Too late

Toothache Blues (Michael’s song)
words & music by MPFS
I loved a girl but her belly was yellow
I took her hand and she told me to mellow
She said, “Michael, yr such a silly, silly fellow.”
I’ll tell you something that ain’t in the news
It’s in my mouth, It’s called the toothache blues
I had a friendship but it went bust
He said, “Michael, sometimes we must
Do what’s best & just for one of us”
I’ll tell you something that ain’t in the news
It’s in my mouth, it’s called the toothache blues
I went to the dentist and he said, “Son,
It’s either the drill or it’s the gun, oh Michael,
How you wanna get this little thing done?”
I said, “Dentist, give me the drill & the gun
The drill’s for me, the gun’s for everyone else.
I got the toothache blues.

Simple Sip of Beer

Simple Sip of Beer
words & music by MPFS
A simple sip of beer took me back to the first beer I ever sipped
bitter and strange all by myself, a bubbly secret not to share
Wild field of wheat soppy with the rain that fell on me last night
the path across the hill is cleaved like by a knife, the stalks still soak through my jeans
Wonderful and bright some mornings are more beautiful than any love I've ever known
The sun comes round the bend, a reliable friend, and surprises me with light
Slip of the wrist, I cut myself while shaving, getting older don't bother me
Little more grey in my beard, more confidence in my weird, sure some wounds don't heal, but most of them do
Delicate and charming your love is like a heron standing on one leg
When it unfolds itself, it unwraps something else, when it takes to flight its wings will shake the sky
That simple sip of beer took me far and near and back here to where I am
A little bit tipsy, a shade too misty, the portrait of an unfinished man

Magic and Loss
Words and Music by Michael Patrick F. Smith
Magic and Loss
Magic and Loss
We gave all the magic
Held onto the loss
Magic!
The Magic we had it fell from our sleeves
And out of our hats it was hard to believe
Believe it to see it and watch how it changed
The obscure of us into the famed
We gave it away!
We gave it away
We gave it like flowers
Gave it to children
We gave it for hours
Two, three, four!
I gave it to you
You gave it to me
We gave it to each other
And leapt in the sea
And we went swimming in it!
Magic and Loss
Magic and Loss
We gave all the magic
Held onto the loss
Loss!
The loss we knew we held it so tight
Like a flame our hands cupped on a dark, drafty night
We made it precious, we made it vain
It spilled on the floor and we coveted the stain
We didn’t give it away!
We didn’t give it away, we wouldn’t give it flowers
We couldn’t tell the children, we kept it for hours
Three, two one!
You didn’t give it to me so I kept it from you
We stood on the sand and stared at the blue
We were just looking at it! (like we were watching TV or something)!
Magic and Loss
Magic and Loss
We gave all the magic
Held onto the loss
